Sentimental In-Home Family Session in New Orleans

Mom didn't reach out because of a birthday or a milestone.
She reached out because she knew things were changing.
The kids were at an age that was going fast. Their beloved Cat, was nearing the end of his life. And the house, this specific version of it with the monster trucks lined up on the shelf and the Beatles books stacked just so and the teddy bear dragged from room to room. This version of home wouldn't look exactly like this for much longer.
She wanted it documented while it was still exactly this.
This Is What In-Home Sessions Are For
Not every family photo session needs a park or a golden hour backdrop or a reason that fits neatly into a caption.
Sometimes the most important reason is simple. This is our life right now and I don't want to forget it.
That's a complete reason. It's actually the best reason.

Their Home
The moment you walked in the personality of this family was everywhere.
Vinyl records lined the shelf above the bookcase. A full Beatles section that extended to the books stacked below it. A mushroom lamp glowed warm in the corner. Monster trucks arranged in a careful row by a boy who takes his collection seriously.
This wasn't a staged home. It was a lived-in home. The best kind to photograph.
Their Beloved Cat
He sat in dad's lap in the red chair like he had a thousand times before.
The kind of pet that becomes so woven into the fabric of daily life that you stop noticing him the way you stop noticing your own furniture, not because you love him less but because he simply belongs there.
Mom knew this season was coming to a close. She wanted him in the photos while he was still there to be in them.
That decision is one of the most quietly brave things a person can do. To look directly at something that is ending and say I want to remember this. All of it. While it is still here.
The Teddy Bear
Wherever the little boy went the teddy went too.
To the bookcase. Down the hall. Up the stairs. It was dragged and carried and set down and picked back up again more times than I could count. That bear is as much a part of this child's current chapter as anything else in the house.
In twenty years that detail will carry a weight nobody can fully predict right now.
The Stairs
Near the end of the session everyone found their way to the staircase.
The kids settled. The cat made his way up past them one slow step at a time. Mom sat at the bottom with her hand resting on her son's head. The older sister perched above. Dad leaned in.
Nobody was performing. Nobody was looking at the camera. They were just together in their home.
The Reading
At one point mom and her son settled on the floor with a book and everything else fell away.
He pointed at the pages. She leaned over him. The toys were scattered around them on the rug. The lamp was still glowing. The trucks were still in their row.
It was just a regular morning. Documented so it could stay that way forever.
A Note on Documenting What Won't Last
