When to Take Newborn Photos | New Orleans Newborn Photographer’s Guide
Welcoming a new baby into the world is a moment unlike any other. In those early days, time seems to blur—filled with sleepy stretches, soft snuggles, and quiet wonder. If you're planning to document this season, one of the most common questions I get as a New Orleans newborn photographer is:
“When should we schedule our newborn photos?”
Whether you're a first-time parent or adding another little one to the mix, you deserve a session that honors this chapter with care, intention, and ease. This guide will walk you through the ideal timing, what to expect at different stages, and how I approach every session with flexibility and heart.
Is There a “Right Time” for Newborn Photos?
Traditionally, the most recommended window for newborn photos is between 5–14 days old. During this time, babies are typically extra sleepy, snuggly, and still adjusting to the world outside the womb.
But here’s what I want every parent to know:
There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline—especially for lifestyle photography.
Those early recommendations come from studio-style, highly posed sessions. That’s not what I offer. I photograph newborns as they are, and families as they are, in the comfort of their own homes.
So if your baby is already a few weeks old? That’s perfectly okay. There’s still so much beauty to capture.
In-Home Lifestyle Sessions = More Flexibility + Less Stress
My newborn sessions are completely in-home and lifestyle-based—meaning you don’t need to pack a bag, clean the whole house, or worry about your baby’s exact age.
You just be.
I’ll handle the rest.
These sessions are calm, baby-led, and centered on connection. That means:
No stiff posing or props
No pressure for baby to sleep on command
No rushing the process
Whether your baby is one week or one month old, we’ll capture real moments—feeding, cuddling, stretching, soothing. The things you’ll actually want to remember later.
What If Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?
Some families reach out when baby is already a few weeks old—and honestly, I love this stage too. Around 3 to 6 weeks, babies often:
Stay awake a little longer
Begin to track with their eyes
Show those first little personality cues
While they may be less sleepy, they’re often more expressive. Plus, parents tend to feel a little more settled by this point, which brings a lovely sense of calm to the session.
For Families with Preemies or NICU Journeys
Every birth story is different—and for some, the earliest days are spent in the NICU. If that’s part of your journey, please know that your photos can happen whenever the time is right for your family.
I’ve photographed babies weeks (and even months) after their expected due dates. The most important thing is that your baby is healthy, and you’re emotionally ready. I’m here for you when you are.
When to Reach Out to Schedule Your Session
If you’re expecting, the best time to inquire is during your second or early third trimester. I’ll reserve your due date on my calendar and keep things flexible since babies rarely arrive right on time.
Once your baby arrives, we’ll set a firm date based on how you’re feeling, your recovery, and what kind of session pace feels best.
Already had your baby? That’s okay, too. I leave space each month for newborn sessions and would love to fit you in.
